Description

SJ 68 SE ASTON-BY-BUDWORTH C.P. ARLEY GREEN

3/5 King's Cottage, Chaplains House, School 5.3.59 House and Oak Lodge -

GV II

Row of 4 cottages. Late C18 shippons converted to cottages in mid C19. Red English garden wall bond brick with slate roof. Cottages divided by prominent transverse walls with large ridge stacks. 3 left hand cottages of 3 bays. Symmetrical, central doorway with 3-light casement windows to left and right of ground and first floors. Right hand cottage has one 3-light casement window and an offset chimney- stack of 2 flues. Right hand gable end has 4-light oriel to ground floor with two 2-light casements above. C19 wing to right, slightly recessed. Front door with one-light casement above 2-flue chimney stack to right of this with off sets. One-storey connecting wing to 2-storey cottage of brick with recessed panels of rendered infill.

The conversion of these cottages from a shippon in the C19 appears, on grounds of style, to have been the work of William White who is acredited with the design of the Chaplain's Cottage (not listed) at Arley Green which formerly exhibited similar characteristic fenestration. The tall, boldly moulded, chimney stacks are also characteristic of his style.
