Description
Arley Green School and Arley Green Lodge is a building that originated as a barn in the early 16th century and was converted into a school around 1830. It features a stone plinth, brick and timber framing with rendered brick infill, and a stone slate roof. The building is single storey.
The east front has a layout of 20 by 2 cells of small framing, with a middle stud in the lower row of cells. The upper row displays chevroning and includes five 3-light mullioned and transomed windows, each two cells wide. There is a doorway located at the ninth cell from the right and a dormer to the right. Adjoining to the left is a 19th-century cottage that has a brick chimney breast with two flues and offsets.
The attached cottage, known as Arley Green Lodge, features close studding with arched braces and a gabled dormer on the upper right side. The left gable end has timber framing and a bay window. Inside, the building contains four full crucks, two of which have two spurs and one with three spurs. All trusses have ties and collars that extend to the side walls, with small posts and yokes rising from the ties to meet the middle spurs, which are angled, along with wind bracing.
