Description
The Barn at The Cobbles, also known as Nos 1 & 2 Chorley Hall Close, is a Grade II listed building located in Alderley Edge. This structure dates back to the 16th century, with late 18th century additions and 20th century alterations. Originally serving as a barn and shippon for Chorley Old Hall, it has been converted into two houses.
The building features a timber frame with brick nogging set on a stone plinth, and it has a continuous outshut made of purple red brick. The roof is covered with Kerridge stone-slate, has a stone ridge, and is topped with two brick chimneys. The north front consists of 16 regular small frames with angle bracing at the wall plate. All openings have been modified in the 20th century, with windows featuring glazing bars and three dormers added. The right end has an addition, and the continuous outshut at the rear has altered the roof line. Inside, the timber framing remains intact, including a timber framed partition wall. The roof trusses consist of tiebeam and collar trusses, with some in the outshut made from re-used earlier timber.
