Description

Barn, now converted into two houses at numbers 414 and 414A Whitechapel Road, Scholes. The barn likely dates to the late 15th or early 16th century, with alterations in the 18th century and conversion to dwellings in 1989. It is constructed of timber framing with hammer-dressed stone and has a stone slate roof. The front elevation has a continuous outshut. The front wall to the left was completely rebuilt in 1989 and contains two three-light mullion windows, a four-panel door flanked by single-light windows, two two-light windows, and a further four-panel door. Altered openings are present in the gable facing the road. The interior consists of three bays and retains fragments of two timber frames; one has both posts and arch bracing, though the truss has been altered, while the other frame is missing one post. Some purlins remain, and the ridge piece is missing. Wall plates show evidence of timber studding, and some finely coursed dry internal walling remains.
