Description
Alderley Edge County Primary School was built in 1854 by J S Crowther. It features header bond purple-red brick with buff sandstone dressings and has a Welsh slate roof with a brick chimney. The building is designed in a decorated style and has a rectangular plan. The east front of the original section is one storey high and consists of three bays. The left end bay, which is under a stone-coped gable, includes a four-light window with reticulated tracery and a label mould on carved head stops, along with a small bellcote at the apex of the gable. The central porch has a chamfered triangular-headed entrance with a board door that has ornate strap hinges. To the right, there is a broad four-centred arched window containing trefoil-headed lights. Inside, the main rooms are open to the roof and feature trusses of jointed crucks with a collar and king post. The school is similar in style to Redclyffe Grange, also designed by J S Crowther. There have been extensive 20th-century additions to the original structure, which are not included in the listing. The building is listed for its group value only.
