Description

Madam’s Farm House is a former dower house, now a private residence, located in Acton. It dates to the late 18th century, though with earlier origins. The house is constructed of red brick, laid in English Garden Wall bond on the front facade, and Flemish bond on the gables and rear elevation. The roof is slate, laid in diminishing courses. The building is three stories high, with three bays. A projecting brick plinth runs along the base. The front entrance features a six-panel door with a fanlight above, set within a stone doorcase with engaged Doric columns, triglyph dosserets, and an open pediment. The windows are sash windows with exposed weight boxes, glazing bars, stone sills and flat brick-on-edge arches. There are gable end stacks and barge boards. A rear (east) wing, completing a “T” shaped plan, includes a good oak boarded door. Inside, you will find six-panel doors on HL hinges, along with some wide-boarded doors. Some of these doors are hung on cranked butt hinges, with blades morticed and wedged into the hanging stiles. The interior also features chamfered beams and exposed joists.
