Description
Mill House Farm is a farmhouse dating from the early 18th century, with a facade added in the mid-18th century. The front is constructed of Flemish bond red brick, while the sides and rear are made of purple red brick, both resting on an ashlar sandstone plinth. The roof is covered with Kerridge stone-slate and features a stone ridge along with two gabled brick chimneys. The building stands 2½ storeys tall and has a symmetrical five-bay front arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern. The windows are flush 16-pane sashes, each set under flat gauged and rubbed brick heads, complete with stone keyblocks and sills. The entrance door, accessed by two stone steps, is framed by an eared architrave and topped with a flat hood. It has a plain rectangular fanlight and a door with four recessed panels. Above the door is another 16-pane sash and a blocked window set within a simple triangular pediment. The right gable features a wooden mullioned and transomed window with lattice leaded iron casements beneath a cambered brick head. The interior has not been inspected, but a kitchen area shows an arcade of three semi-circular stone arches that likely contain boilers. This building once served as the agent's house for Mottram Hall, which may account for its refacing.
