Description

A pair of houses located on Buxton Road, Macclesfield, were originally constructed around 1806, with a second house added around 1850 as servants’ accommodation. They are built of brick with a slate roof. The houses comprise two storeys and three windows, although they are of unequal size. The central entrance to No. 106 features a door with eight fielded octagonal panels and a traceried fanlight, all set within a stone architrave. A further entrance is located to the left in No. 108. The ground floor has tripartite sash windows, while the upper floor windows are sashes lacking glazing bars, all likely dating from around 1850. A moulded stone eaves cornice runs along the top of the buildings.

The interior of No. 106 retains its original layout, including a tightly curved staircase with moulded tread-ends, slender turned balusters, and a swept rail, lit by a full-height round-arched window with panelled rebates and a reeded architrave to the rear. A niche is incorporated into the wall beside the staircase, alongside an original built-in cupboard. The space above the stairway is adorned with acanthus plasterwork. The drawing room ceiling features delicate Adam-style plasterwork, including garlanded panels with a central rosette and an acanthus frieze. Internal doorways are framed by reeded architraves, and the panelled doors retain their original door furniture, featuring delicately worked brass and wooden handles and finger plates. A short section of original cast-iron railing adjoins No. 108. The original house is believed to have been built by a silk manufacturer, who also constructed the adjacent weavers’ houses at Nos 100-104 Buxton Road.
