Description

SJ 97 84 DISLEY C.P. FOUNTAIN SQUARE

7/24 The Fountain II

Fountain: Dated 1834 with late C19 alteration. Ashlar gritstone and sandstone. Chamfered square plinth with smaller, chamfered, square pillar with semi-circular headed niches in each facing having cast-iron, lion's head mask fountains emptying into semi-circular basins. Original capstone is a flat pyramid, with a moulded cornice, surmounted by plain urn. This has been raised on an added sandstone block and moulded band, when a triple cast-iron gas (now electric) lantern was put into the urn. Original inscription cut into north-west face reads "This fountain WAS ERECTED BY RICHARD and THOMAS ORFORD ESQ For the Use of the Inhabitants of Disley A.D. 1834" in a mixture of plain and italic scripts.
