Description
The Fountain is a structure dated 1834, with alterations made in the late 19th century. It is constructed from ashlar gritstone and sandstone. The fountain features a chamfered square plinth supporting a smaller chamfered square pillar. Each side of the pillar has semi-circular headed niches that contain cast-iron lion's head mask fountains, which pour water into semi-circular basins. The original capstone is a flat pyramid with a moulded cornice, topped by a plain urn. This urn has been raised on an additional sandstone block and moulded band, and now holds a triple cast-iron gas lantern, which has been converted to electric. An original inscription on the north-west face reads, "This fountain WAS ERECTED BY RICHARD and THOMAS ORFORD ESQ For the Use of the Inhabitants of Disley A.D. 1834," presented in a mix of plain and italic scripts.
