Description

Field's Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from 1648, as indicated by a dated stone fireplace, and was restored in 1903 for the Cholmondeley Estate. The building features a brick nogged and plastered timber frame with a machine tile roof. It has two storeys and an attic, consisting of three bays. The north-west gable has a stone plinth and heavy timbers framed into close studding with a middle rail, and both the first floor and gable are jettied. There is a blocked ovolo moulded flush window on the ground floor, and a replacement projecting mullion and transom window on the first floor, flanked by blocked openings. A projecting mullion window is located in the gable. The south-west gable retains some original framing and has a flush ovolo moulded window at ground level, along with replacement projecting mullion and transom windows at three levels. A timber framed porch, which has a modern door, carries the date of restoration. The south-east gable features painted brickwork up to the first floor level with replaced timber framing above, while the other walls are mainly painted to resemble timbers. The farmhouse originally had a "T" plan, and the stack to the original cross wing has diagonally set flues. Inside, there are ovolo moulded beams and exposed ceiling joists, along with a stone fireplace that displays the date and initials NW and EW.
