Description

The Old Hall is a house built around 1707 by William Smith of Warwick for the first Earl of Cholmondeley. It incorporates an earlier Elizabethan building, but in 1801, the structure was reduced to its current size. The building is constructed of whitened brick and has a slate roof. It is two storeys high and features three bays, with a one-bay, lower, two-storey wing to the east.

The central entrance consists of a rebated six-panel door set within a moulded doorcase that includes a plain rectangular overlight. This entrance is flanked by engaged Roman Doric columns, which lack bases and support a gabled, slated hood with brackets attached to the columns. There are projecting brick bands at both the first floor and eaves levels. The ground floor has large recessed sashes with glazing bars, stone sills, and segmental stone heads, while the first floor features sashes with stone eared architraves and flat heads. The opening above the entrance is filled in. The east wing has two-light flush casements with stone sills and segmental heads. The west gable displays a filled lunette above a partly filled opening with eared architraves. The north front has a two-bay gable that is set forward, with pairs of sashes under segmental heads, and sashes with eared architraves on the first floor. There is a stone band at the first floor and a brick eaves band with a filled lunette in the gable.

Inside, the hall features panelled window shutters and door linings, as well as six-panel doors, some of which have fielded panels. The Old Hall, in its original form, is illustrated in Country Life on 19 July 1973.
