Description
The Stone Elephant and Castle is located in the garden of Elephant and Castle Cottage on Stone House Lane in Peckforton. This structure, dating from around 1859, was carved by local stonemason John Watson. It features a red sandstone elephant with a castle howdah, both carved from solid pieces of stone. The elephant stands on a large flat base and has a saddle with straps and tassels that supports the castle above. The castle includes a gatehouse topped with a turret that has crenellations and arrow slots, leading to a keep with matching corner turrets. The castle walls are detailed with courses, and the windows are adorned with arches that contain glass.
