Description

48 King Street is a house that is now used for commercial purposes. It dates from the 16th century or earlier and was refronted in 1907. The building is timber-framed and brick, topped with a slate roof. It has two storeys, with the main gable facing the street and a small range at right angles to it, which runs parallel to the street. The gabled range is likely the oldest part of the building, although the right-angled range may have been rebuilt.

The gabled range has been refronted, but its side elevation features large square panels with arch-bracing and intermediate horizontal and vertical rails, extending three bays deep. There are inserted windows in this facade, but remnants of a wood mullioned window can still be seen at the ground floor. The facade facing the street, dated 1907, has a brick ground floor with a six-light shop window, and the doorway is located in the right-hand return. The cambered tie beam in the gable may be original, while the rest of the facade clearly dates from 1907. The right-hand bay is rendered, likely over brick. The ground floor features a six-light shop window, and there is a three-light gabled dormer in the roof. The interior has not been inspected.
