Description

The Delaney Building at Crewe and Alsager College is one of the original structures of the former Crewe Teacher Training College, built in 1911 by H Beswick, the County Architect. This building is constructed of terra cotta and Accrington red bricks, topped with a slate roof. It has an "H" plan layout, featuring an 11-bay single storey front with a two-storey section at the rear.

The prominent assembly hall is seven bays wide and projects forward, flanked by lower two-bay wings on either side. The central bay is accented by brick pilasters with terra cotta bases and bands, which support a terra cotta pediment adorned with three corn stooks, a cartouche, and the date in the tympanum. The end bays of the central section have lower open pediments on pilasters that frame recessed openings with archivolts. Small circular panels with four keystones are also present in the tympanum.

Additional decorative features include a moulded terra cotta plinth, sills, string course, and console cornice. The windows are designed with mullions and transoms, incorporating hopper lights, semi-circular transom lights, and bullseye windows above. The building has a plain brick parapet with moulded coping. The side wings are simpler, featuring flat-headed hopper and pivot windows dressed in terra cotta, a lightly moulded cornice, and a brick parapet with moulded coping. Atop the building is an octagonal drum with corner shafts that supports a lead-covered cupola with a weather vane. The rear section of the building is noted as having no particular interest.
