Description
Stiles Meadow Farmhouse dates from the early to mid-17th century, with later 18th-century additions, and a small 20th-century extension. The original 17th-century sections have oak frames brick-nogged and rendered at the front, with a stone plinth and stone to the front gable wall. The 18th-century wing is constructed of white-painted stone. The roofs are covered in Kerridge stone-slate. The farmhouse is of one-and-a-half storeys and comprises three sections. The cross-wing to the right features a painted rubble front, an early to mid-17th century oak frame at the rear, and a stone chimney on its right wall, partially obscured by a 20th-century single-storey lean-to. The central section has an early or mid-17th century oak frame with exposed heavy timbers at the rear, though it is rendered at the front. The left wing is probably from the 18th century and has no visible distinguishing features. A gabled, centrally placed, oak-framed porch, originally open, now has a recently fitted outer door. A ridge chimney is located opposite the porch, and a brick chimney is on the left gable. Some frame members have been cut to accommodate 19th-century vernacular small-pane wood casements. Two of these have been replaced by late 20th-century small-pane windows at the front. Inside, there are massive chamfered oak beams, one showing pegholes suggesting a former baffle-post to a lobby entry, with an altered inglenook behind. There are jowls to the beams on both storeys, and the cross-wing has a tongue-stopped chamfered oak beam. Internal oak framing is visible in the central portion and cross-wing. There are two plain enclosed stairs.
