Description
The Valve House in the Reservoir Dam, built around 1830 by engineer William Crosley, is constructed of buff gritstone and features tunnel-vaulted cyclopean stonework. It has a semi-circular entrance and a 20th-century barred wooden gate. There are stone wing walls leading to the sluiceway. This valve controls the outflow from the reservoir, which was created to supply water to the Macclesfield Canal, opened in 1831, as noted on the Bryant Map of Cheshire published in the same year.
