Description
The barn at Barlow House Farm, located to the east of the farmhouse, dates back to the early 17th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and brick infill, and originally featured a thatched roof, which has since been replaced with slate. The north front of the barn is symmetrical and has a stone base, consisting of five bays on each side of double barn doors, with arches and tension braces at the corners and near the barn doors.
There are 19th-century additions on the east, west, and south fronts that obscure the original 17th-century construction. Inside, the barn has a three-cell plan defined by low walls that align with the posts of the barn doors on the north front. These walls support two posts to the east and one to the west, each holding a truss made up of a cambered tie-beam, queen posts, and a collar. The east wall features small framing arranged in six by three cells, with arches and tension bracing at the corners, and a similar truss of queen posts and collar. The west wall has been replaced, while the south wall mirrors the symmetrical arrangement of five by three cells of small framing on either side, with a central plank door in a three by three cell configuration.
