Description
Hare Hill is a villa dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, originally built for the Hibbert family and remodelled and extended in the mid-19th century for the Brocklehurst family. The villa is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond with a Welsh slate roof and four brick chimneys. The east front has two storeys and three bays. The lower storey features a continuous verandah with cast-iron chinoiserie supports and a frieze, originally with a tented glass roof (though only a partial survival remains). Behind the verandah are two long casement windows on the ground floor, and above them, three sash windows with marginal lights, stone sills, and flat, wedged brick heads. The verandah extends to the south front, where it incorporates a porch with a hipped roof supported by brick piers and two wooden Tuscan columns. The porch features half-glazed doors and panels. A later addition to the left side of the villa includes four-pane sashes.
Inside, a well staircase features square balusters and a curving mahogany headrail. The hall contains a late classical fireplace with sub-Corinthian columns. Six-panelled doors are set within moulded doorcases. The ceiling frieze is decorated with rosettes.
