Description
The Old Parsonage is a house dating to 1714, located in Turton. It is constructed of coursed sandstone, with watershot detailing to the sides and rear, and has a stone slate roof with gable copings and gable chimneys. The building follows a double-pile, three-bay plan. The symmetrical facade, originally featuring five windows, has a doorway with a segmental-headed moulded surround. Above the lintel is a carved panel displaying the Chetham arms and the initials āS Cā with the date 1714 in the corners. The windows are tall casements with glazing bars, though the openings were likely altered. The right return wall shows three windows on each floor, likely alterations from the 19th century. The left return wall includes a small round-headed lancet window at attic level, along with three other windows. The rear elevation features a blocked doorway, a modern extension that interrupts a hoodmould at first floor level, and two cross-window stairlights with diamond-leaded lights, the upper one breaking the eaves. Inside, the central hallway has a diamond-flagged floor and contains a contemporary staircase with a closed string, turned balusters to the first floor, and splat balusters leading to the attic.
