Description
This terrace of cottages, known as Nos. 1-19 Browning Street, including Nos. 20 and 22 Queens Square, was built in 1844. Constructed from coursed sandstone blocks, the cottages feature a slate roof with ridge chimney stacks. The row consists of ten cottages, with the wings forming Nos. 20 and 22 Queens Square on the left and Hillside House on the right.
The buildings are two storeys high and symmetrical, with a pedimented center and wings that project slightly forward. They have a hollow-moulded cornice and gable copings. All openings are adorned with plain labels that have returned ends, while the surrounds are otherwise plain. Each cottage has a door and a window on the ground floor, and two windows above. The wings each have one window on both floors, and in the center, Nos. 9 and 11 feature coupled doorways. The center pediment displays a carved shield inscribed with "PRINCIPIIS OBSTA," while the pediments of the wings have shields inscribed with "MDCCCXLIV /EDIFICAVIT/O.HARGREAVE."
A garage doorway has been inserted at the ground floor of No. 22 Queens Square, and the glazing of the windows has mostly been altered, but otherwise, the terrace appears intact.
Historically, these cottages were built by Oliver Hargreaves M.A. (1788-1858), who owned Hoddlesden Hall and the surrounding estate. They were likely part of an intended but uncompleted model estate, alongside Hargreaves Street, which shares a similar style but has been altered.
