Description
St Stephen's Conservative Club, originally known as Little Harwood Hall, features a coach house to the southeast and curved walling with piers to the east. The building dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and is constructed of stone. The south front, which is now the rear, displays two gabled Jacobean wings made of coursed stone with quoins. These wings have three storeys of mullioned windows, with the west gable featuring a 6-light, 5-light, and 2-light window arrangement, while the east gable has a 5-light, 4-light, and 2-light arrangement, all with moulded stone mullions with fillets. The central space between the wings has been filled in with a modern addition.
The north front, which is the current main facade, was added in the 18th century. It matches the overall height of the original structure but consists of only two storeys. This facade is finished in scored stucco and features quoins, a Tuscan doorway with a fluted frieze and a broken pediment, as well as a traceried round-arched fanlight. Modern sash windows are arranged in a pattern of 3, 1, and 3, with the central window having its own quoins and a gable/pediment. There is a low extension to the east in the same style, which connects to the curved wall that stands about 7 feet high, topped with a flat capping and two square piers adorned with a fluted frieze and cornice. This curved wall links the main building to the coach house, which is also made of stone with quoins, featuring modern garage doors and three roundels above, along with projecting wings.
