Description
This is a row of nine cottages located at 76-92 James Armitage Street, built around 1870. Originally constructed from brick, the cottages at Nos. 80, 82, and 84 have been pebble-dash rendered, featuring painted ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs. They are primarily one storey high with one window each, except for Nos. 90 and 92, which have two windows. The cottages have round brick arches over renewed doors and overlights, with these paired between single-window houses and centrally positioned in others. The windows are topped with segment-headed gauged brick flat arches and have projecting stone sills. Brick eaves gutter brackets and a moulded brick cornice are present, while the low-pitched roof features transverse ridge chimneys. These cottages are significant both architecturally and sociologically as examples of the single-storey cottage, which was the preferred type of working-class housing in 19th century Sunderland.
