Description

This is a terrace of ten houses, now offices, located on Frederick Street in Sunderland. The houses were built around 1840. The houses are constructed of brick, with Nos. 38-41 rendered and No. 33 painted, and have ashlar dressings. The roofs are covered in Welsh slate with brick chimneys. Wrought-iron balustrades lead to stone steps, and cast-iron area railings are set upon ashlar dwarf walls.

The terrace is two storeys high with a tall basement, and each house has three windows. Steps lead up to the doors on the left side of each house, with the exception of No. 37, which shares a door with No. 36. The doors are of a "Sunderland type," comprising six panels that fold back to reveal inner panelled doors. Doorcases are mostly of pilasters and entablatures, featuring a frieze decorated with palmette and anthemion patterns. The doorcases to Nos. 40 and 41 have Greek fret detailing on their pilasters below plain entablatures. Windows have wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills, with some original sash windows retaining glazing bars, though many have been altered. The roof features transverse ridge chimneys. The balustrades to the steps are plain, while the area railings have patterned heads.
