Description

The Whitburn War Memorial is a Grade II-listed structure located on the village green south of Front Street, near several other Grade II-listed buildings. This memorial, made of Dalbeattie granite, is designed in the form of a Classical obelisk, standing approximately 4.5 meters tall. The obelisk is square in shape and rises from a tapering plinth, which features a scotia moulding and is set on a single step.

The front face of the obelisk is inscribed with the words "LEST WE FORGET," accompanied by a bronze wreath below. The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919 AND IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF THE PATRIOTISM OF THOSE WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY IN THE HOUR OF HER NEED. ERECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF WHITBURN." The names of the men from Whitburn who were commemorated for their service in the First World War are recorded on the other three faces of the plinth.

Additionally, there are two subsidiary granite tablets at the foot of the memorial. One tablet, inscribed with "1939 – 1945 LET US ALSO REMEMBER (NAMES)," is placed on one side, while a second tablet, identical in form, is located on the opposite side and reads: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THOSE FROM MARSDEN DISTRICT WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WARS + 1914 – 1918 (NAMES) 1939 – 1945 (NAMES)."
