Description
The Church of Holy Cross is a parish church located in Wallsend, dating back to the 12th century, with a 17th-century porch. It was restored in 1909 and is constructed from roughly coursed and squared sandstone rubble, with a coursed squared sandstone porch. The church features a nave, chancel, and south porch. The south doorway of the nave has an inner arch behind a corbelled arch, while the porch has an elliptical-headed door opening with a chamfered surround and impost blocks. Inside, there are stone benches, and a round base at the west end of the nave once held a font. The walls are preserved to about half a metre in height, except for the doorways and porch. Historically, the roof was removed around 1797 by William Clarke of Dockwray Square, North Shields, who planned to repair the church but sold his property in Wallsend before any work was completed.
