Description

Cross House is a school, now a private residence, dating to 1748. It was given to the village by Isabel Stewart, daughter of James Moncaster of Newcastle and Wallsend. The building is rendered on its front, with a rubble rear and ashlar quoins. It has a pantiled roof. The house is two storeys high, originally with three bays, and features a one-storey entrance porch on the left. A renewed door sits under a keyed lintel in the right return of the porch, which is detailed with pilasters and a blocking course. All windows are sash windows with glazing bars in plain reveals, and there is a first-floor string. The roof has a low gable parapet and a rendered chimney at the right end. The porch was restored in 1819, and again around 1980.
