Description
The Old Customs House, located at 65 Borough Road in Tynemouth, North Shields, is a Grade II listed building dating from 1856, built for the 4th Duke of Northumberland. This structure features a basement and two storeys, arranged in five bays. The basement is constructed of ashlar stone with a plinth, while the upper floors are made of snecked sandstone. The roof is low-pitched and covered with Welsh slate.
Notable architectural features include tall voussoirs surrounding a double door with a fanlight in the sixth bay. The first-floor windows have moulded sills with architraves, friezes, and pediments, while the second-floor windows have projecting sills, all of which are sash windows with glazing bars. There is also one pedimented window on the ground floor in the left return. The building has a moulded plinth that is higher on the left side due to the slope of the site, supporting giant end pilasters. The eaves are adorned with a gutter cornice and a blocking course.
