Description

This is a hotel, now offices, begun in 1800 and designed by D. Stephenson for the Duke of Northumberland. It’s part of a larger scheme for the development of New Quay and the market place, completed in 1817. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof and is built in an Italianate style. It is three storeys and has an attic, arranged as five bays wide. The ground floor is rusticated. The central entrance has a renewed five-panel door and overlight, set within a deep porch with leafy capitals and a dentil cornice. Voussoirs outline the ground-floor sash windows with glazing bars. A giant Ionic order appears above the ground floor. The first-floor windows are set within architraves, while those above are in plain reveals. Pilasters delineate the bays of the attic. A ramped balustraded parapet is above the three central bays. A coat of arms has been removed from the central panel.
