Description
The War Memorial, built around 1919, is located in Whitley Bay on the east side of The Links. It is made of granite and features bronze decorations and plaques. The memorial consists of a tall tapered square column with a bronze wreath decoration beneath a Scotia-moulded and banded coping. Each face of the base has three bronze plaques on projecting panels that list the names of those who died in both world wars and commemorate the memorial's construction, which was funded by £7,000 from public subscriptions and £1,000 from local authority funds, with 90% of the endowment fund designated for the dependants of the deceased. Surrounding the memorial are dwarf walls and semi-circular steps, with flat-coped circular walls on the east and west sides and three steps on the north and south sides. Low square piers flank the steps, and there are 20 tapered square piers in the outer circle that formerly held a chain.
