Description

This is an early 20th-century sewer gas lamp. The standard is made of fluted cast iron and features a curved glass lantern, which is missing one pane of glass. The lantern is held up by four ornamental brackets and has a high valve beneath the domed canopy. At the top, there is a ladder rest that also supports the hinged top of the hood when it is opened for cleaning or maintenance. The cast-iron base plate is inscribed with 'J.E.WEBBS PATENT SEWER GAS DESTRUCTOR' and 'WEBB LAMP Co. LIMITED POULTRY'. The lantern head is marked with the name 'SUGG'.
