Description

The statue of the Duke of Northumberland, located south of the Master Mariners' Homes on Tynemouth Road, dates from around 1839 to 1841. It was initiated by C. Tate, who passed away in March 1841, and completed by R.G. Davies. The statue is made of sandstone and depicts the robed Duke standing on a tapered square pedestal, which rests on a corniced plinth with sloped coping. Above a bronze plaque that commemorates the centenary of the Tyne Mariners' Benevolent Institution, unveiled on 11 September 1937, the name "NORTHUMBERLAND" is inscribed.
