Description

The Caretaker's Flat at Brandling House is a Grade II* listed ancillary pavilion, originally built as part of a country house, and now serves as a residence within a club. It is dated 1757 on the rainwater head and was designed by James Paine for Charles and Elizabeth Brandling, as indicated by the initials "CBE" on the rainwater head. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a plinth and features a graduated Lakeland slate roof.

The flat has two storeys and consists of five bays, along with a left coach-house extension that is one storey and one bay wide. The central three bays are accentuated by rusticated quoins. The main entrance features a central double door with an overlight that has glazing bars, while the first bay contains a 20th-century door with an overlight. The ground floor has fixed lights, and the first floor is adorned with sash windows that include glazing bars, flanked by niches in window-shaped recesses.

Additional architectural details include a first-floor sill string, a dentilled eaves gutter cornice, and a parapet above the hipped roof, which has a central chimney. The coach-house on the left has an inserted window with glazing bars in a blocked segmental-arched opening, along with panelled impost bands, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course. There is also a Victorian letterbox located on the left return of the building.
