Description

The service wing to the east of the hall at Felbrigg Park is a Grade II* listed building, originally constructed around 1750 by James Paine and later remodelled and enlarged by W.J. Donthorn in 1825. This former estate office, which now includes a shop operated by the National Trust, is primarily built of brick with some areas rendered in Roman cement.

The structure has a rectangular shape and is characterized by a long passage at the front, flanked by projecting wings. The symmetrical facade features seven bays, with a flat-roofed corridor that was added or remodelled by Donthorn in 1825. The bays are separated by pilasters, with the first, third, fifth, and seventh bays showcasing 4-light windows that have Y-tracery glazing bars and a transom beneath a 4-centred arch. The central bay contains a similarly glazed double-leaved door, while the second and sixth bays are blank. A low brick parapet runs along the top of the facade.

Behind this facade lies Paine's two-storey range, which has a rendered central section with three bays under a pediment and features 2-light leaded casements. A cupola with a clock on the south face, a lead roof, and a weather vane sits atop this section. The left-hand two bays are made of brick and have similar casements, while to the right is a rendered screen wall.

The seven bays are flanked by single-bay gabled wings added in 1825, which also have 4-light windows with Y-tracery glazing bars and two transoms, along with a parapet and shaped gables. At the rear, there is a courtyard; the west range is two storeys tall with sash windows that have glazing bars, while the north range is also two storeys but features 20th-century fenestration. The eastern wing consists of a single storey and an outbuilding.
