Description

The Stables is a Grade II* listed building located in Felbrigg Park, constructed in 1825 as noted on the datestone in the courtyard. It was designed by W.J. Donthorn for Admiral William Windham. The building is made of brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof.

The layout includes a central courtyard surrounded by a two-storey range to the north and single-storey ranges to the east and west, with an open arcade to the south and two-storey towers at each corner. The symmetrical south facade showcases a central stone-dressed four-centred archway, with a hood mould that extends as a band over the flanking arcades, which consist of four bays supported by brick piers and four-centred arches on a rendered plinth, complemented by iron railings.

The corner towers are single-bay and feature a cross-casement window on the ground floor and a three-light casement on the upper floor, with broad corner pilasters and a castellated parapet that transitions into a stepped gable. The east range of the courtyard serves as a cottage, with openings beneath four-centred arches. The west range contains a three-bay stable area, where some original fittings remain. To the north, there is a two-storey, three-bay castellated range with three open arches on the ground floor leading to carriage houses, and three square-headed three-light casements above.
