Description

Gosforth House, now known as Brandling House, is part of the High Gosforth Park Club. This country house was built between 1755 and 1764 by architect James Paine for Charles and Elizabeth Brandling. It was converted into a racecourse club and grandstand in 1881 and underwent restoration in 1921. The building is constructed from sandstone ashlar with a plinth and features a felt-covered graduated slate roof. It stands three storeys tall, has seven bays, and includes one-storey links to the wings.

Designed in the Palladian style, the house has a rusticated ground storey. The central three bays project slightly and are topped with an open pediment, containing three glazed 20th-century doors with overlights, flanked by doors in the adjacent bays. The set-back outer bays feature sash windows. The first-floor windows in the central and end bays have chambranle architraves, blind balustrades, and segmental pediments, with the central one being bracketed. The intermediate and all second-floor windows have plain reveals, and all sashes include glazing bars.

The building is adorned with a dentilled eaves cornice and pediment, along with a central floating cornice. The one-storey extruded links have plinths, mostly blocked sash windows, an eaves band, and a blocking course, with 20th-century doors inserted in the left link. The south front has five bays, where arched niches alternate with blocked openings on the ground floor. The piano nobile features five windows with aedicule treatment under pediments, with the outer ones being segmental and the central one round.
