Description
Nos. 2 to 10 Market Street are houses, now used as offices, built around 1839 for Richard Grainger. They are constructed from sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof and rise to four storeys. The façade features nine bays, with the central six bays projecting slightly. The ground floor has been renewed, except for No. 10 on the left, which retains its plinth and rustication, as well as a fascia and cornice. There are steps leading up to a four-panelled door with an overlight that has glazing bars. The windows have been renewed, with No. 8 showcasing a circa 1900 faience ground floor in a free Baroque style. The upper floors have sash windows, all with glazing bars in No. 10 and some in the upper floors of the other houses. The second-floor windows are adorned with aprons above a band, and there is a prominent cornice at the second-floor entablature, along with a top eaves band and cornice.
