Description
This building, located at 2-8 Raby Cross in Newcastle upon Tyne, is a post office constructed between 1976 and 1978 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners. The main contractor was Shepherd Construction. The building features pale metric modular brick on a timber frame, with blue cladding on the first floor and red weatherboarding on the ground floor beneath the shop windows. It has a blue metal roof supported by plywood box beam purlins and is a single storey with deep eaves. The windows are made of timber. The interior is not of special interest. This block serves as a prominent feature at the entrance to the Raby Cross shopping area, which was developed at the southern end of the Byker estate due to its distance from the main shops on Shields Road.
