Description

A terrace of houses located in Lancaster Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, dates from the mid-19th century. The terrace comprises numbers 4 to 24. The construction is of English garden wall bond brick with a painted ashlar plinth and dressings, and sandstone rubble to the rear and returns. The roofs are of Welsh slate, except for number 22, which has a felt covering, and numbers 8 and 24, which have concrete tiles. The terrace is two storeys high, with each house featuring three bays. Each house has doors and overlights contained within architraves to the right of the entrance. Windows have wedge stone lintels, with projecting stone sills on the ground floor and a sill band on the first floor. An eaves band and gutter cornices are present. Brick chimneys are located at the ends of the terrace. Dormers have been inserted into numbers 10 (slate-hung) and 12 (with a pediment). The terrace is included on the list for its group value alongside the Church of St. Matthew, and as an example of early working-class housing.
