Description

Nos. 1-4 Eldon Square, along with Nos. 6 and 7, are a group of houses built between 1825 and 1831 by architects Thomas Oliver and John Dobson for Richard Grainger. These buildings are now used as offices and shops. Constructed from sandstone ashlar with a Welsh slate roof, they feature a basement, three storeys, and some later attics, totaling 33 bays. The design includes slightly-projecting 5-bay end pavilions marked by giant pilasters, with the houses varying from three to five bays in width.

The entrances have 8-panelled doors with overlights, and No. 4 has glazing bars. The windows are mostly sash style, with plain reveals and glazing bars, and there are aprons beneath the ground floor windows. The first floor has a sill string in the outer bays, while the second floor features an entablature and cornice, with a simpler cornice at the top. A later mansard roof is present on No. 6, which has five dormers, while No. 1 has two inserted pedimented dormers. Ashlar ridge chimneys are also part of the design. The right return of the building maintains a similar style, with 20th-century shops inserted at the ground floor and a giant corner pilaster, while the upper floors have sash windows with glazing bars.
