Description

This building, located at 48-54 Newgate Street, is a group of houses that have been converted into shops, offices, and a public house. It was constructed around 1837, likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. The structure features sandstone ashlar and painted brick with ashlar dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has stone gable coping.

The main elevation consists of four storeys with seven and nine bays. The ground floor has been altered for 20th-century shops. The upper floors are adorned with sash windows, some of which have glazing bars, set in plain reveals. The second-floor windows have aprons and slightly projecting sills. A prominent cornice runs along the second floor, and there is a top cornice as well. The roof is not visible from the street.

The left return of the building has three right bays that match the style of the front elevation. The three left bays are made of painted brick and feature a ground floor from around 1900, which includes recessed six-panel doors under pediments with large overlights, flanking a wide plate-glass window that curves towards the doors. The upper floors have sash windows with glazing bars beneath wedge stone lintels, with second-floor projecting sills, a first-floor sill band, and an eaves band. The roof on this side also has gable coping. It is noted that properties 20 to 26 have been redeveloped behind the facade.
