Description
1-20 The Brow is a block of flats and houses built between 1978 and 1981 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners. The main contractor was Fairclough Buildings Ltd. The building features red and buff brick cladding over concrete block internal cross-wall construction, accented with bright green and blue weatherboarding and near-white Eternit panels. The roofs are monopitch, covered with Marley Modern concrete tiles.
The structure consists of one, two, and three storeys. The north face is primarily red brick, while the west and south sides have high bright-green weatherboarded eaves above the first floor. There are red-brown and blue timber balconies for the flats numbered 9 to 16, with two-storey balconies on the central range (flats 9 to 14). An inner courtyard is mainly faced in Eternit and features two sets of timber steps leading to the flats. A bird box is located on the side of flat 19. The windows are timber framed with timber surrounds and aluminium opening lights, mostly sliding. The timber doors have glazed panels, with some replaced in hardwood. Blue fences and bin stores are integral to the courtyard's design.
The Brow serves as a balancing block to Bolam Coyne at the eastern edge of Ayton Park, showcasing a shift in materials and colors from the earlier Bolam and Ayton neighborhoods. The interiors have not been inspected.
