Description

South Lodge, gateway, walls, and gates to Jesmond Cemetery were built in 1836 by John Dobson for the Newcastle General Cemetery Company. This structure is made of sandstone ashlar and features a roof of small graduated slates, showcasing a classical style. It is a single-storey building with one bay. The central area has a blocked tripartite window beneath a pedimented gable supported by four pilasters. The gateway includes two-stage towers with raised stone surrounds framing square-headed pedestrian entrances, topped with a cornice and chamfered coping. The upper sections of the pediment are shaped and adorned with antefixae and an acroterion. High, flat coped walls enclose the area in front and project forward to square piers with sloped coping. The cast iron gates for vehicles and pedestrians feature spear-finialled standards, dog-bars, and acanthus ornamentation on the principals.
