Description

This building is a block of three flats located at Raby Cross in Newcastle upon Tyne, constructed between 1976 and 1978 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and White, Young and Partners as the structural engineer. The main contractor was Shepherd Construction. The structure is made of pale metric modular brick on a timber frame, featuring red-brown weatherboarding and dark blue timber-fronted balconies. It has blue metal roofs supported by plywood box beam purlins and stands three storeys high on concrete stilts above an open ground floor with ramps. There are stairs on the side covered by a plastic canopy, as well as a plastic canopy leading to the second-floor balcony. The windows are made of timber with aluminium opening lights, and the first-floor living rooms have enlarged windows. The doors are timber with glazed panels, some of which have been replaced with hardwood. The interiors have not been inspected. This block serves as a prominent feature at the edge of the Bolam area of the estate.
