Description

Nos. 33-41 on Grey Street is a building that dates from around 1835, likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. Originally built as the Bank of England and Northern District Joint Stock Bank, it now serves as offices. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar and features a plinth and a Welsh slate roof, showcasing a classical architectural style.

The building stands four storeys tall and consists of ten bays. The first and third bays have six-panelled double doors with overlights that include glazing bars, while the tenth bay has a similar door with an altered overlight. The ground floor is characterized by channelled rustication and a lintel string above the ground-floor sashes, with those in bays six to nine featuring aprons. Above this, a fascia and band in the Giant Corinthian Order support sash windows framed by architraves, with pediments on the first floor and bracketed sills on the second floor, which is adorned with a high modillioned entablature.

The third floor includes a balcony with fat turned balusters, and the sashes are set in plain reveals between pilasters beneath the top cornice and blocking course. The windows have glazing bars, and some rooms retain shutters and original stucco decoration.
