Description

This is a row of houses and shops, now shops, dating to around 1837 in Newcastle upon Tyne. They were likely designed by John Wardle for Richard Grainger. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a roof that is not visible. It rises to four storeys and comprises thirty-three bays, arranged in groups to accommodate the curve of Clayton Street, with a curved right corner facing Fenkle Street. Later Art Deco ornament was added to the right corner bay, and one first-floor window was blocked. Number 87, at the left end of the row, was refronted in 1870, a date inscribed on the balustrade. Modern shop fronts are now in place. The upper windows are mostly sash windows, some with glazing bars. A band is located on the second floor, and a cornice runs along the top. Number 87 features window architraves and first-floor pediments, and has a roof balustrade.
