Description
Sallyport or Wall Knoll Tower is a Grade I listed structure located on Tower Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. This lesser gateway is part of the 14th-century Town Wall, with a meeting hall for the Company of Ship's Carpenters added in 1716. The building features coursed squared sandstone for the wall and sandstone ashlar for the hall, topped with a pantiled roof. It stands two storeys high and has two bays. The wall includes a central round stone arch that holds studded double doors with large hinges. Above, the meeting hall has two round-headed sash windows with glazing bars, set in panels with voussoirs and keys that continue with channelled rustication. The top cornice projects over the end and central pilasters. The roof is adorned with four square corner turrets, each topped with pyramidal stone roofs and ball finials. On the left side, there are steps leading up to a door with a fanlight featuring glazing bars, and above it is a low-relief panel depicting a ship's hull.
