Description
The tomb of the Keenleyside family, located about 80 meters south of the gates to Jesmond Cemetery, is a canopied structure dating from around 1842. It is signed by R. Davies of Newcastle. The memorial commemorates Keenleyside children who died in 1841 and 1842 at ages one, twelve, and ten, as well as other family members, including Thomas W., who died in 1867. The tomb is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a stepped base with an effigy of a baby on a couch, which is sheltered by a canopy supported by four slender octagonal piers. The design includes Tudor arches and a central pendant. It is notable that the years 1841 and 1842 were marked by cholera epidemics.
