Description

This is a complex of three terraces of houses, a pair of houses, and a “stilt” block of flats built between 1978 and 1980 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as site architect, White, Young and Partners as structural engineers, and Fairclough Building Limited as the main contractor. This group holds group value as a significant example of late 20th-century architecture. The construction utilizes pale metric modular brick cladding over concrete blockwork cross-wall construction, with a concrete Marley Modern tiled roof, except for the three-storey flats at numbers 10-14.

The houses at numbers 1-5 have blue weatherboarding on the front, with brown and blue at first-floor level, and green fences to the rear. A pergola and bird boxes, along with a heating link, fill the space between numbers 5 and 7. Numbers 7-17 have brown weatherboarding, with blue accents between the first-floor windows, and projecting brick porches with weatherboarding. Numbers 2-8 feature blue and brown first-floor weatherboarding between windows, with red brick retaining walls to the front. Numbers 2-4 have green weatherboarding and brick fences to the rear. The flats at numbers 10-14 are three stories high, entered via open stairs, and include a green balcony and green fencing underneath. The south-facing front, overlooking a significant hillside slope, has blue balconies. Numbers 16-30 are fully weatherboarded, with red on numbers 16-22 and 26, brown on number 24, and blue on numbers 28 and 30. A bird box is present at number 16, and projecting porches feature on numbers 20, 22, 26, 28, 30, 16, 18, and 24; numbers 16, 18, and 24 also have blue metal door hoods. Number 30 has an additional bird box. Red brick retaining walls with brown fences contribute to the overall design. The windows are timber-framed with aluminium opening lights, though those at number 17 have been replaced with uPVC. The doors are timber, and some have been renewed in hardwood. The interiors were not inspected. A blue timber pergola with a plastic sheet roof is an integral design feature. The complex is situated on the top of a hill.
