Description

This is a terrace of ten houses, built around 1860 in Newcastle upon Tyne. The terrace is constructed of English garden wall bond brick with an ashlar basement and dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof. The terrace was built in two phases: numbers 1 to 7 on the left, and numbers 8 to 10 on the right, which are slightly earlier. Most of the houses have basements, with number 1 having three storeys, and the remaining houses having two storeys. Attics are present in numbers 2 to 9. Each house has between three and five bays. The basement of the left-hand section (numbers 1 to 7) features channelled rustication, while the right-hand section (numbers 8 to 10) has an ashlar plinth. The front doors are four-panelled, with overlights in raised stone surrounds, and bracketed canopies. The sash windows are mostly original with plate glass to numbers 1-7, and mostly margined glass to numbers 8-10, set within architraves on the ground floor and under wedge stone lintels on the upper floors. Floor bands and gutter cornices are present. The earlier section has a low-pitched roof, while the later section features pedimented dormers, with some dormers present in the earlier section. Brick chimneys are topped with ashlar cornicing to some. Cast iron balconies are found at numbers 2 to 7. Nosed steps lead to the front doors, with cast iron balustrades and handrails at numbers 1 to 7 and number 10.
