Description

Nos. 14-50 (even) and Nos. 23-53 on St Peter's Road in Byker are terraces of houses and four flats built between 1978 and 1981 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners. The main contractor was Fairclough Buildings Ltd. The buildings feature red brick on the street side and pale brick on the rear courtyard and private gardens. The Commercial Road side has pale brick alternating with red-brown and brown weatherboarded eaves over first-floor strip windows, along with full red-brown weatherboarding. The roofs are made of Marley Modern concrete tiles, with stepped roofs on Commercial Road, mostly in pairs, although number 44 has a single roof.

The street elevation to the flats includes timber steps with sloping timber roofs, and there are projecting first-floor balconies made of red-brown timber. The windows are timber framed with timber surrounds and aluminium opening lights, primarily sliding. Many original timber doors with glazed panels remain, sheltered by red metal door hoods. A bird box is located at no. 53 St Peter's Road, and there are additional bird boxes at no. 50 Commercial Road and on every stepped pair down the slope. A brick arch with a timber portal shields a stone entrance way with a pediment and half columns, which are reportedly salvaged from Elswick Hall. This arch links no. 53 to no. 50 Commercial Road. The gardens along Commercial Road and St Peter's Road are enclosed by brown fences, which are an integral part of the overall design.
